ccs729
FARGO – The meter is running for drunken driving arrests in Fargo. Police have installed two electronic billboards in the city that will tally the total arrests for driving under the influence for the year, with updates every Friday, Sgt. Mike Bernier said. Bernier said he picked up the idea from Rapid City, S.D., and he considers it an education tool. “We’re just trying to get people to not drink and drive,†Bernier said. As of Wednesday, Fargo cops have made 374 arrests for DUI in 2010, according to police statistics. The electronic billboards are in the 1200 block of 25th Street South, and the 800 block of Main Avenue. A third billboard counting DUI arrests that won’t update weekly is in the 4000 block of Main Avenue. Bernier said a state grant paid for the three signs, which totaled about $7,000.
