Bye Bye Floppy Disk

Recommended Posts

Goodbye, floppy disk. Sony recently announced that in 2011 it will discontinue the 3.5 inch floppy disk in Japan, one of the last markets in which Sony still sells the disks, so stock up now if you need them (that sound you hear is the generational divide ripping even further apart, as kids born after 1990 haven't used floppy disks except, perhaps, as beer coasters in their dorm rooms). The Examiner reports that Sony sold 8.5 million floppy disks last year, way down from 2000, when Sony sold 47 million.

Sad days. If I were to build a brand new machine I'd probably still try to put a 3.5" drive in it. Never know when you might need that Dos boot disk. These days a guy has to have a live boot linux CD if you have an emergency where a boot disk would've been needed.
