The 2019 government shutdown

I am glad to see it somewhat over. I'm glad to see everyday get to go back to work as well. People should be getting their back pay checks and all. But I agree with you @ryanator that politics have to ruin peoples lives. It seems like both parties are out to try to do each party in, yet they seem to forget they they are part of a bigger party - America - and that their primary goal is for the good of this country, not personal vendettas and the cost of the American people livelihood.

I watched the whole State of The Union Address last night. I thought Trump did decent. My favorite was when he said America will always be free and never bow to socialism, and they zoomed in on Bernie Sanders and he just sat there  What blows my mind is when people are even allowed to talk about socialism. Back in the 30-40s you would be tried for even talking about that. But it don't really matter about Trump's speech, I don't think either party is going to work together 'just because'. I think we may be in for another shutdown. Surprised Trump didn't declare a national emergency yet.

Well it looks like we have until Friday to see what happens again. It's looking positive so far though.

Looks like Trump is declaring a national emergency (get read for lawsuit), as well as signing the bill.

Be careful of what one wishes for. We can try to keep something from coming in, but also from going out... I hear that this bill that he would sign has a lot of provisions that are against his stances, so it would be a win for the other side anyways. Also this further sets the precedent of a president declaring emergencies when they want. Just wait until the other side gets back in, by then emergencies might be more normal. Our standards and values have sunk low anyways, just rotting away as well.

Still just seems like a huge waste of time and money to me. The country has a lot bigger problems to be solved, than trying to stop some illegal immigration.

There's probably plenty of different statistics and maybe these are way off, but some kind of stats for reference at least https://www.factcheck.org/2018/06/illegal-immigration-statistics/

Any way. I don't think a wall will really work or deter that many people. Tunnels, over it, just put a hole in it. Does a slightly harder path mean some form of escalation to counteract the barrier?

Whether rates are dropping or not, some individual numbers are high, but compared to the number of legal immigrants and citizens it's a pretty irrelevant number at this moment IMO.

Seem like quit a few people on the internet aren't that fond of Nancy Pelosi making threats about Democrats declaring a national emergency to take away guns. People are just sitting waiting for someone to pull a stupid move like that.

Sure, I can go type "Walls that don't work" into a search engine and post a bunch of links to other sites

It will stop some people, it won't stop them all. I don't know that the number of people it will stop is worth the cost. Just keep things going the way they are and no one will want to immigrate anyway.

If walls and fencing don't work, I wonder why most of the rich and famous live behind them? Of course they are deterrents. Will it stop everyone? No. But I imagine it will help along with security officers.

Now if you want to talk about spending money on it, that's a good discussion. But the money that is spent annually dealing with illegals is far greater than the cost of the wall.

@ndboarder I put on my tinfoil hat and started thinking "what if the wall being built isn't to keep immigrants out, it's to keep Americans in."?
