Well for my little Sunday project I installed Rockbox on my Ipod. Lately I have been just dreading using my Ipod because I despise Itunes so much. So I loaded up Rockbox today and I must say i love it! No more itunes it's all just drag and drop. Way more featues games etc. Was a little tough to install but after trying to install it by hand I found an easy and quick installer. Then just instal themes etc. I like some of the new features like it shows like how much battery life you have left etc. Alot of people say it sounds better than the regular Ipod also. I can't tell a difference as of now, but have onely been playing with it for about 10 minutes. Now I am finally happy with my Ipod! :-D

Here's a quick pic of it in action.I'll take some more pics soon.

Is this the same rockbox that I have installed on my Archos recorder?

http://www.rockbox.org/ I have been using rockbox for years and I still love it and keep checking the site for updates. Maybe they'll figure out how to get color on my little grey-scale screen

I believe rockbox started with the Archos product line, then slowly branched off to the other mp3 players. Its good stuff!

Pretty sure I'm going to have to give it a whirl now though.

I was looking at their site and other than the main page the rest of it seems to be down. Does it still support playing purchased .m4p files?

I don't know about that. But I know it supports tons of file types, thats why alot of people like to use it so they can use speciality type of audio formats.

The only downside I have seen to using it, is it cuts down on your battery life quite abit. One cool feature is it shows you exactly how many hours and minutes your battery has left.

Well as much as I liked Rockbox, and went through all the trouble of installing and setting it up, I switched back to the old Ipod firmaware and restored my Ipod last night. The reason? Well I loved everything about Rockbox, except for the drain on my battery life. It's getting alot better with each build, and I guess on the irivers they have it perfect, but they just can't seem to totally get all the components to shut off in the Ipod to save power. Its not bad but you lose about 4-5 hours that you would normally have with the default Ipod firmware. Oh well guess back to the drawing board for me.

I'm still pretty tempted to try this out, just to see how it handles the playlists that should be there, the music I've bought off of iTunes, and such. Of course I'm curious what functionality will still be available like rating songs, and such. Unfortunately I usually bring mine to work to listen to all day and if it drains the battery that badly I don't know if it would be worth the monkey business.

Tried this out again last night, it works fine and they have improved battery life since last time I tried it. But I still went back to the original firmware.
