FBI Has Been Paying Geek Squad To Spy On Customers

"Maybe the FBI could simply Google images of "John Podesta's art work" for another lead."

The Constitution is used for wiping their back side.

I read this last night as well. Getting the nerds to do their dirty work for them. I know the EFF wasn't to happy about this.

You know computer repair is a touchy subject. While somewhat off-track, do you give up your privacy when turning over your computer to be worked on? Or do you retain your privacy? I know quite a few Fluxoid members have worked in computer repair. I would like to see what they think. Do you feel the customer gives up their right to privacy when turning a computer in to be worked on. Or does it fall in the same category as say HIPAA laws?

Should be treated like attorney - client privilege unless it's child porn. All those tip lines are Stasi like in nature. "Tips" "See something, say something" "Neighbor has a grudge line"

@jmanz and @C Pav what's your take on post #5 that I mentioned? Do you feel like a customer gives up their rights when you worked on their computers back in the day? I am interested to see what you guys think before I post my feelings on the matter.

Artsy photo collages..........aspiring artists.........

The jpegs aren't going to search themselves......

LOL at above! Videos if we are lucky...then again some files can't be unseen but wish they were.

Truth is yes do give up their rights and if we find something illegal while we work on it then we need to report. In this case it should not even be a story. All shops should be required to report anything illegal. How else will such activity be stopped? You telling me you find majorly illegal stuff like child porn, an elaborate ISIS backed attack plans, human trafficking, huge drug ring or anything like that and you just remain silent? NO!

Ok here is my take. First all agree with everything @C Pav said above on the illegal stuff. I think we all can agree on that. But I also do think privacy needs to come into play as well. No copying of owners files. What data you see should not be shared (unless illegal). I always felt like a doctor in a way. The stuff I had seen over the years never came as a shock to me. I had seen it all. But there is a lot of sensitive stuff techs see besides all the nudes of the owners wife :sneaky: . You have access to tax documents, legal documents, and think of all the Quickbooks files we would have to transfer. Think of all their passwords that were given to us, emails, Quickbooks, etc. I just think there is some privacy responsibilities that come with a tech working on a owners computer. Some that should carry legal responsibility on the companie the tech is working for.

I agree but first off wait what? Tells about said pics. Only ones you showed me ever were ones of a certain pharmacy owner that I wish I could forget.
Yeah data should never be copied, stored, shared unless it's an illegal issue.

Oh dear God, why did you bring those memories up?

You know what is funny i had a couple of different "MRI" cd's that Geek Squad accidentally left in peoples machines. These were officially labeled, not .ISOs off the internet. They were just a bunch of automated tools to run to clean peoples machines. The techs were so dumb that they had to make an all-in-one style cd. Also one of the cds was actually embed with some nasty autorun stuff that other AV tools would pick up. So it makes you wonder, was the government back in the day providing them tools to run on machines to place backdoors on a mass scale?

Come on man, you (well we) used to run hitman pro and walk away until it was done... ;)

They ended up changing that program later on, but yes at one time in it's development it was all automated script.
