so... Cuphead finally released last week

http://cupheadgame.com/

I'm pretty disappointed.  It looked awesome originally.  Then they added some more good old-fashioned stuff, 2d side scrolling platforming.  But then I heard it was punishingly difficult.  I've watched a few streamers playing it and it certainly looks difficult.  So far I'm a little tempted to pick it up just because, but at the same time I think it would irritate me to the point of having to just quit and never play again

Funny I meant to post something on this. I had been looking forward to this (this was the whole reason I bought my xbox one at release) it's taking a dam long time btw. But I also heard it was a very tough game. I know I read that people that had PS4 were pissed since it was xbox only. This generation it is rare to not be multi platform. As much as I wanted to play it I think I will pass.

I gave in and purchased as well.  I did the tutorial quick on work PC and tried one level for about 5 minutes, will try some more tonight from the Xbox.

@Davidc - yes the intent of the game was to have the 30's style animation, and it looks very good.  Originally it was just supposed to be a series of boss encounters, similar to something like Punchout.  The developers failed to deliver multiple times over the past 4-5 years (I think it's been at least that long now).  They added some more to it than just bosses, but they've also made it to where it is supposedly a pretty difficult game.

@nodleI've talked to some friends that have been playing.  They said it is tough but fair, mostly going into fights learning the patterns and getting muscle memory down for each of them.  They are fans of things like Dark Souls though, so for me it may be fun for a bit, then frustrating to the point of having to quit.  We'll see.  There is an option to select a simple mode on the levels, or at least the one I started, so maybe it isn't going to be horrendous until a ways in

Yeh the animation was pretty impressive. I think that is pretty cool how they are paying homage to content creators from 85 years ago.

Agreed, that's why I was excited for this game originally and had been up until I started hearing how difficult they had made it.  We'll see how it is.  It also sounds like the old cartoons...

It's difficult, but doable.  I've cleared the first two Isle's all on Regular.  There is a simple difficulty option, which removes phases from at least some bosses from what I've seen of streamers playing each mode.

Each fight progresses through phases as you damage the bosses. If you die, you start over.  Each phase of a fight is a bit difficult, but has patterns and some telegraphing of an attack that is going to happen, so it's pretty much about learning the phase, repeating it to get it down and then move onto the next, repeat (each phase of course).  Eventually you get some muscle memory and learn each phase and are able to complete and move on.

So far, while it is difficult and you repeat each fight, it hasn't been overly frustrating to a point where I felt like I was making no progress.  I did have to take a break here or there to give my hands a rest from repeating some sections and realizing when I'd hit a point where I was just getting worse.  A short break to rest and mentally reset helps.

All in all, with the right expectations going in I've been having a lot of fun with it and enjoying it.

I have watched a lot of video over the weekend on it. I love the art style. But the hardness scares me. I even watched some guys doing speed runs on it, they do it almost so perfect it makes you wonder if it is a bot.

They aren't bots.   Those guys have probably finished it on Expert difficulty and S ranked all the levels, like some I've seen working on that.  Once you've played it, you'd see that it is punishing but fair, meaning while difficult you can learn the fights and they are very consistent.  There isn't a lot of RNG to succeed, just learning the patterns and executing.

@nodle - no I haven't beat it yet.  I have cleared all the run and gun levels and bosses through the first 3 isles.  The "4th isle" is a casino and I believe that is just one fairly unique encounter to complete to gain entrance to the final fight with the Devil

My play time on it has been sporadic here and there.  I still enjoy my time with it when I do play and think the fights are tough but fair, in that you just need to invest time to learn them and improve to beat them.

Beat it this weekend.  l also had one achievement fail to pop for getting all coins in each run and gun level - so I started a new game and ran through the 3 isles again.  Beat all the necessary levels to move along on the simplest setting and grabbed all the coins in the run and guns again.  Took a little over 2 hours.

Once beaten I also tried a level on Expert settings for a little bit to get an S rank for an achievement, and I cleaned up a couple levels on the first isle to beat each an A- rank or better for another achievement.
