I thought I had it narrowed down to an LED LCD tv around the 46" range, but by all the choices and hidden gimmicks and terms of tv's now, I'm confused.  Also, I'm wondering if most HDTV's will go on sale closer to Christmas, it seems like the cheaper one's meant to get customers are the Black Friday TV's.

My wanted specs (and are very general) are at least 46" size and produces nice crisp color and would last a while.  I'm not into 3D, and I don't need 240hz motion.  And I don't feel like spending a lot, I was hoping $800 max.

I thought LED LCD, but then hear of most are just edge-lit and leak light.  I then thought about Plasma, but not sure.

Here's the Samsung un46d6003 (46" LCD LED)

What about this, it's $1000, but 60 inches, Sharp 60" Aquos 1080p led lcd hdtv:

Should I buy now or wait a few weeks?  Any recommendations on other types of HDTV's?

I bought a TV a week and half before superbowl, only to find they went for deeper discounts after.  It may not hold true this year, but I read in a buying guide from the beginning of this year

...The logic probably holds, but who knows if there was the same inventory with the flooding and what not.

I'd like talk up my tv a bit more, but we still only have SD service.  Netflix usually looks good.  DVDs and blu-rays do to.
The sound is OK.  I'd look to hook it up to a reciever, but don't have one anymore.

I have seen a few general complaints across most models.  The sound is flat or otherwise lacking.  By brother in law ended buying a separate sound bar and that does help.  The other "complaint" if you can call it that, is that you have to adjust the settings.  In a lot of amazon reviews, you'll see someone post their settings.

BTW, I think its Sony and Samsung lcd panels are "the same."

Any LED or LCD will have some white washing and leaking because they are backlit in one way or another.  My most recent purchase was one of Samsung's higher end TVs, which also happens to be 3D, but even in these models I can tell there is some leak on the edges.  It isn't terrible or distracting, but its there and will be on any LED or LCD you purchase.  If you do go with LED I'm a big fan of Samsung.  We also have one of their cheaper 37" models in our bedroom.

If you are looking purely for image quality over anything else, plasma may be the way to go though. I have yet to see a TV top my Pioneer Elite plasma's images (not including 3D).  Plasma will give you the blackest of blacks and doesn't suffer from losing details due to backlighting.

As far as when to buy, if you can find a good deal now, on a set you would be happy you could.  I've heard that there will be better deals on televisions closer to Xmas than were seen over the past weekend, but who knows.  Also, depending where you purchase there may be price match guarantees where you could get some cash back if they run a better deal at a later date.  For example, I bought my latest Samsung when it was $1000 off at Best Buy.  A couple weeks later they ran it again at $1300 off (but without the 3D stater kit).  I went in with my receipt and they gave me the additional $300 back since I was still within the 30 day return/price match period.
