Who can you trust in this world anymore? I just went through a whole deal with my oil change. Yes I know how to do my own and would love to but I am just not set up for it. Been taking my car into my Honda dealership where I purchased it before. Kinda a long story thought I had an oil leak. Anyways who can you even trust anymore to do simple tasks like this? How do you know that they are just throwing cheap oil in and not using my synthetic? How do you know if they every tighten your filter correctly or wont strip your oil plug bolt? I have a hard time with people anymore. I want to go back in time to when people have standards. A man's word was as good as him. I believe there still are a few here and there, but overall it's tough to come across one. I guess they same can be said about anything these days, or even my own work in general. But I know one thing, after I walk away from this job that I will be proud of my work, and have never ripped people off.

Yeah, I agree. The skill is not there anymore and the sense of doing an excellent job is gone as well. I also want to go back to the days when there were proud men to do work that had skill as well. Now days it's all bout getting the job done fast which means not doing as well as a job.

To go slightly perhaps off subject, one part of your dilema sir is that a guy hardly dare change his own oil anymore. I have the tools, the jacks, the oil drain, etc to do it in a matter of minutes but I don't. The reason being that if I change my oil and then something goes wrong the dealer/manufacture may void any warranty or service plan you have. Just another way to rope a guy into paying for oil changes, but at least by doing so I know if anything goes mechanically wrong with my vehicle in the next 5 years it is covered (unless I fail to get my vehicle in on "schedule")... GRRRRRRRRRRRR

Make one man do the work of twenty and expect the same quality.

This was a well timed topic. Last month I took my truck in to have an antifreeze leak fixed. It cost about $870. The next day it was still leaking, so I made an appointment and thought they would repair it, yesterday I get the bill for another $300, saying it was the water pump. When I called to question it, of course they claimed 2 different leaks, and said they can't give stuff away. I told them I wasn't looking for a handout, just an explanation. He is going to get back to me. Anyway back to the trust thing. Was there 2 leaks? Very possible, can you completely trust these people? I'm certainly not convinced.

I totally agree with this topic. I do also have two more recent vehicle service stories.
1) Mechanics and most other service dealers charge high minimum service charges even when doing practically nothing. I won't name anyone on this one, but I had whole axle I bought myself put in my car in return for a computer repair I did for them. It took him 15 minutes. He kind of laughed and said he typically loves these jobs for customers where he charges by the book of 1.5 hours (I paid only $70 for the part). Parts plus labor would have costed normally around $400.
2) Oil change at Walmart - I had my oil change done at walmart a few months ago (don't take this as a bash not to go there anymore if you do) The guy who did my oil change forgot to put the cap back, since then I always smelled oil pretty heavily, but though since the car is a 1994 and it's not the cleanest engine and it must have oil spilt on the engine. 3 weeks later, I open the hood and find the cap not on and luckily it was still around lodged in between somewhere. I called walmart about it, the service manager apploligized and said that same guy that worked on it was fired a little bit before because of poor service. They cleaned my engine for me, and gave me a note for a free oil change the next time.

Dam man i would have been pissed. I would had told them to buy me a new car. You kinda expect some sort of responsibility by taking it to these places, i mean it's not a 100 part it's a vehicle that is very expensive. I expect just what I pay for - that everything is done right and double checked. But less face it do you think some service man at Walmart getting paid minimum wage cares if he gets dirt in your engine while he's pouring in the new oil? It's sad to say but our quality in about every field has gone to the dogs. You know the saying "if you want something done right you have to do it yourself".
